FAQs about recycling electrical items

Why should I recycle old electrical items?

In the UK, approximately 103,000 tonnes of electrical items are disposed of each year instead of being reused or recycled. This results in the creation of e-waste, which harms the environment and human health. When electrical items end up in landfills or are illegally dumped, precious resources such as gold, copper, aluminium, and steel are lost. These discarded or unused items represent a loss of around £370 million annually to the UK economy in valuable raw materials. Furthermore, the average UK household possesses around 20 unwanted electrical items. By donating these items to charities, we can significantly impact the well-being of others. Additionally, manufacturing new electrical items generates carbon emissions; recycling old items could reduce CO2 emissions, equivalent to removing 1.3 million cars from the road.

I am not near a drop-off point. What can I do?

Many local councils offer home collection services for electrical recycling. Recycle Your Electricals locator above can help you find out more about drop-off locations or home collection services. If neither option is available, you can return the items to our Blackburn office, and we will take care of the disposal.

Can I also drop off other items apart from my personal alarm equipment?

Yes, anything with a plug, battery or cable can be recycled and turned into something new.

What do the items get recycled into?

What are the benefits of recycling unwanted electrical items?

Recycling electrical items helps mitigate one of the fastest-growing sources of waste. It is not only beneficial for the environment, reducing the threat to human health and the planet, but it also contributes economically by reintroducing valuable resources into the economy.
